Global Dynamic Systems (GDS) has developed Discover Buddies, a route-based travel matching platform designed to help travelers find compatible travel companions based on destinations, travel dates and individual travel preferences.
Travelers often rely on messaging groups, social media posts and informal communities to find people following similar routes. Discover Buddies was developed to make this process more structured by bringing travel profiles, routes and matching tools together in a dedicated digital platform.
A Platform Built Around Travel Compatibility
Discover Buddies focuses on the compatibility between travelers rather than simply placing users in large public groups.
Users can create profiles, add their planned destinations and travel dates, and explore other travelers whose routes overlap with their own.
Two travelers do not need to follow exactly the same itinerary. Their plans may overlap for only part of a journey, allowing them to connect for specific cities, routes or travel periods.
Route-Based Discovery
The platform has been designed around route information as one of the main factors in travel companion discovery.
Travel dates, destinations and personal travel preferences can be used to identify potentially compatible travelers and make it easier to compare plans before making contact.
This structure is intended to provide a more organized alternative to searching through large messaging groups or individual social media posts.
Verification for Supported Travel Communities
Discover Buddies can also support verification processes for specific travel communities where additional eligibility or participation checks are relevant.
The platform is initially launching with a focus on DiscoverEU travelers. For this community, Travel Pass verification is used before participants can publish travel listings.
This verification process is intended to help keep the DiscoverEU section focused on genuine participants and reduce unrelated or misleading listings.
The platform’s underlying structure, however, is not limited to DiscoverEU and has been designed to support additional travel and international mobility communities in the future.
Developed by GDS
The technical development of Discover Buddies has been carried out by GDS, including the platform’s user account infrastructure, profile system, travel listings, route management, verification workflows, matching functions, administrative tools and supporting web services.
The project combines GDS’s software development capabilities with practical experience in international youth mobility and travel-focused digital services.
Discover Buddies is commercially provided through GDS and will continue to evolve as new features, travel communities and matching tools are introduced.
Designed to Grow Beyond a Single Travel Programme
Although the first active community on Discover Buddies is DiscoverEU, the platform has been developed as a broader travel matching service.
Its infrastructure can be adapted to different types of travel communities where people need to find others with similar destinations, dates or travel preferences.
Future development may therefore extend the platform to additional international mobility, rail travel and travel companion communities without changing its core route-based matching model.
Discover Buddies Is Now Available
Travelers can visit Discover Buddies to explore the platform and, where supported, create a profile, add travel plans and discover other travelers whose routes and preferences may be compatible with their own.
